Welcome to the Cumbria Talent Force
– your alumni.
Cumbria’s Talent Force recognises our brilliant next generation that have been educated in Cumbria and now work in one of our many organisations in the county giving the young people in your school and college the opportunity to imagine what their future may look like.
School leaders are all too aware of the advantages that access to increased social capital can give their students. ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’ is a truism, and clearly many people achieve great things from humble beginnings. But we know that we are a very long way from achieving the type of social mobility (or, even better, social justice) that we would like to see in the UK – and that schools play a crucial role in opening young people’s minds to possible futures ahead of them.
Raising young people’s aspirations, helping them to imagine futures they may never have considered, can be a powerful motivator – particularly for those students without the social and cultural capital enjoyed by many students.
A young person who has four or more meaningful encounters with an employer is 86% less likely to be unemployed or not in education or training and can earn up to 22% more during their career.
Introducing the Cumbria Talent Force
The Cumbria Talent Force is a free service for Cumbria’s schools and colleges to use to support your careers programme.
Members of the Cumbria Talent Force are aged between 18 and 35, are positive role models with a desire to share their experiences with other young people through a range of outreach activities, whether that is to provide a written or video case study, give an assembly talk, get involved in your school or college’s careers programme or even work within a particular curriculum area supporting teachers and lecturers in your school or college.
Each of our members have agreed to share their education and career pathway with pupils and students attending schools and colleges to help them gain a great perspective of all the career opportunities available to them in Cumbria.
The Cumbria Talent Force is new, so this year we will work hard to grow the membership working with individual employers across the County, The STEM Ambassador Network, Northwest Apprenticeship Ambassador Network and Cumbria Future Leaders.
