Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
Since leaving Caldew, I’ve developed a solid pathway into the nuclear industry. My journey began in 2022 with a Dream Placement at Nuclear Waste Services, which introduced me to the sector and helped shape my career goals. After completing my A Levels in 2023, I started a Level 6 Nuclear Scientific Degree Apprenticeship with NWS, combining university study with practical experience across the organisation. In 2024, I became Chair of the Cumbria Future Generation Steering Group, working to support opportunities for young people across the region. In 2025, I stepped down from this role to join the Centre for Leadership Performance’s First Line Manager Programme and took on the position of Networking Lead for the NWS Young Person’s Network, helping connect and support early career colleagues.
— What do you love about your job?
I love that every day can be different... Different people, different challenges and a lot of freedom to have a go at new pieces of work. This is very important to me as an Apprentice in the organisation.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Take every opportunity that comes your way, especially the ones that feel scary. Those are often the experiences you’ll value the most. Never be afraid to speak up. A single moment of confidence or self belief can open doors you never expected. Trust yourself, back your abilities, and don’t wait for the “perfect moment”, just go for it!
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Staying Positive, Aiming High.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
Do a little bit of research to see if jobs in the nuclear industry align with your interests, reach out to people (like me!) who work in the industry to gather their insight, or even see if an employer would take you for a work experience placement... That would really help you decide.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Know your worth.
If you secure an interview/job, it's because you deserved it. Even if you are very nervous, know that the people who selected you believe in you, so you should too.
