Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
I started my career in retail part-time, while I was at school. I left to do an apprenticeship in confectionary and I actually didn't like it at all! I chose to leave to do hospitality and become a supervisor at the Starbucks in Kingstown, Carlisle and worked through courses to become a coffee master. After turning 20 I realised it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I applied for a recruitment position and got the job. I have been in recruitment now for 2 years.
— What do you love about your job?
I love helping people and giving guidance to young people which they may lack in school or at home.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Think about the skills that you have, and the skills you can build on rather than the job title because skills transfer!
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Speaking, Problem Solving.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
You need to be a good communicator, you are the middle man 99.9% of the time, therefore you need to keep on top of things. Advice would be - write everything down!!
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Be yourself is the best advice I've been given. sounds rubbish but it's true!
