Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
After finishing GCSE's at QEGS Penrith, I moved to Ullswater Community College for 6th Form. There I studied Science, PE and Health and Social Care, as well as involving myself in a variety of sports club, and helping out with younger years sports training too. This was a difficult move as I was moving from the school I had been at for 5 years, leaving friends and teachers behind, however as soon as I started at UCC it was so welcoming and I made a great group of friends instantly. I had always been set on going straight to university and doing a sports science/ physio therapy course, however when employers came into sixth form and discussed apprenticeships, it encouraged me to do some further research which ended up with me applying to a variety of apprenticeships.
Whilst at 6th form, I worked as a Lifeguard at Center Parcs which allowed me to improve my communication and team work skills, all of which have helped me during interviews for apprenticeships and writing a University application.
— What do you love about your job?
The flexibility the job gives me. Support throughout the project team, who are able to help me with not only my day job but my university assignments too. Ability to go out and promote the apprentices to local schools, including my own. I am able to earn money and gain valuable experience and skills at the same time. Having the university experience when I go for block release for 3 days every semester.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Look at all the options on offer to you, don't just think you need to go to university to get a degree for the job you want. There are so many different job role routes now on offer through an apprenticeship.
Go on work experience, it will help you understand if that job role is for you or not.
Don't think you need to pick subjects that relate with what you want to do for the sake of it, instead pick subjects you enjoy.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Staying Positive, Teamwork.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
There is so much variety and flexibility to move sectors within construction, so you are able to work on different projects: highways, rail, defence etc.
It is so interesting learning about what other people within the industry do, and you can change and grow within your career however you please.
So many opportunities to get involved in. For example I have had the opportunity to go to different projects and i am going to Birmingham, to speak to other Early Careers with National Highways.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Be nosey and ask questions, as people are always willing to help you grow within your job role.
