Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
I left secondary school in the summer of 2015 and began my career in Early Years as an apprentice at Hollingarth Nursery. During this time, I completed my Level 3 Early Years Apprenticeship through Furness College while gaining hands-on experience in practice.
In September 2017, after qualifying, I moved to a sister nursery, Old Vicarage, where I progressed into a Senior Practitioner role. Over the years, I continued to develop professionally, taking on increasing responsibility and advancing through the roles of Room Leader and Deputy Manager.
I am now the Nursery Manager, leading a large setting that cares for up to 131 children per day and managing a team of 45 staff. Alongside my leadership journey, I have completed further professional qualifications including Paediatric First Aid, Autism Awareness, Behaviour Management, and Safeguarding.
— What do you love about your job?
I love being a Nursery Manager because it allows me to make a real difference every day, both for the children and the staff team. Supporting children to thrive, creating a safe and nurturing environment, and watching their confidence and development grow is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy leading and developing a strong team, supporting staff in their professional journeys, and working closely with families to ensure the very best outcomes for every child.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
If you’re thinking about a career in Early Years, don’t feel pressured to have everything figured out straight away. Gaining hands-on experience through apprenticeships, work placements, or volunteering is a great way to learn while you earn and to see if the role is right for you. Be open to learning, ask questions, and take every opportunity to develop your skills – working with children is challenging but incredibly rewarding, and there are many pathways for growth and progression within Early Years.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Staying Positive, Teamwork.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
If you’re considering a career in Early Years, go in with an open mind and a genuine passion for working with children. Be prepared to learn every day, as the role is both rewarding and challenging. Gaining hands-on experience through apprenticeships, placements, or volunteering is a great way to build confidence and skills. Most importantly, be patient, caring, and committed — the impact you have on a child’s early development can last a lifetime.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
The best advice I’ve been given is to slow down and see the world through the child’s eyes — that’s where the real learning happens.
