Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
When I left school, I worked in a few different roles, including as a welder, for a time before completing the Creating Careers in Construction programme with All Together Cumbria. During this programme, I discovered a love for project management. I completed a two week placement with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, which gave me all the knowledge I needed to go away and set about achieving my project management goals.
I completed a range of courses which i knew would help me to secure a degree apprenticeship and I am now studying Project Controls Level 6 with University of Cumbria, on a degree apprenticeship with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
— What do you love about your job?
I love the opportunity to work collaboratively on exciting projects. It's great to get involved and I love that I have the opportunity to work alongside like minded enthusiastic colleagues to make a real difference and learn from each other. I love the inclusive learning environment we foster here at MSI.
I love the different networks we have. I sit on the Aspiring Careers Network as Network Lead and I love that I have the opportunity to help colleagues across the business to network, discover new exciting opportunities and build more flexibility.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Talk to as many people as possible. The power of networking will allow you to build professional relationships and discover opportunities you otherwise might have missed. Keep trying new things and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Staying Positive, Teamwork.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
Speak to as many people as you can to find out about different roles within the nuclear and construction industry. You will be surprised by how many opportunities there are out there and there will be something which you feel passionate and enthusiastic about. It's so important to love your career as we spend so much time at work.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Ask questions. This advice is so important because it's how we gather information and learn about things we're interested in. Asking questions demonstrates a genuine interest and a commitment to discovering more which is exactly what employers look for in potential candidates.
