Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
I attended sixth form at West Lakes Academy, and then went onto my degree apprenticeship course with AtkinsRéalis, this is a full time role where I attend University once a week and the other 4 days i work full time within my project manager role. I am due to graduate in July 2026 and then i will be a full time Assistant Project Manager.
— What do you love about your job?
I love the people mainly, everyone is so friendly and willing to help you. I also like that no day is the same. Each day i am learning something new or being involved with different tasks. I also love that there's immense opportunity to travel, we have offices all over the world, and in my short time at AtkinsRéalis I have been able to travel so much with the company.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Make sure you pick something you truly enjoy! Don't just do it because your friends are or because your mam and dad did it. Pick something that plays to your strengths and that you can really see yourself enjoying in the future. A job isn't for life but it isn't worth comprising your happiness for.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Speaking, Leadership, Teamwork.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
I would say my biggest piece of advice would be that every days a school day! You are constantly learning on the job and sometimes that can feel daunting or like you don't feel as though you are skilled/good enough but just remember you might not be the most experienced in the room, but you are in that room for a reason! Keep being keen to learn, ask the questions, speak to everyone. Often the more senior people can be great mentors to grow your knowledge and experience too, use them! There is so much opportunity in this industry so have a go at it all.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
'Shy kids don't get sweets'
I think coming from a school mentality, you automatically assume you will be handed opportunities or given help if you need it, however i soon learnt that is not the case. If you want it, you have to work for it! Being proactive if you want certain opportunities and speaking up for yourself, will make you go far. Be your own biggest cheerleader!
