Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
I finished school in 2016 and went to Barrow Sixth Form. At first, I thought I wanted to be a psychologist, but after one year I realised it wasn’t right for me. I changed direction and took A-Levels in History, Law and Politics—subjects I enjoyed and was interested in.
In 2018, I got an offer to study Contemporary History and Politics at the University of Salford. Before going to university, I took a gap year working to save money.
While at university, I completed a work experience placement with Women’s Community Matters in Barrow. This gave me real world experience and helped me think more clearly about my future career.
After graduating, I worked in supported accommodation for care leavers. The job was challenging but rewarding and helped me understand the barriers some people face.
I later joined the Civil Service, which works to help run the country. While there, at age 24, I was diagnosed with combined-type ADHD. Being diagnosed later in life explained a lot, and with the right support and adjustments, I’ve been able to do well in my career.
I now work in Team Barrow, helping regenerate the town and create opportunities for the future.
— What do you love about your job?
No two days are the same, government policy is forever changing and I like that. It also feels good to know my work is making a (hopefully long lasting) difference.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
You should pursue the things you enjoy, there are many more opportunities out there than you think. It is also absolutely fine to change your mind about what you want to do at any time. Enthusiasm and passion goes a long way to make a career/job something you genuinely enjoy.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Speaking, Problem Solving, Staying Positive.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
Be curious, the Civil Service has a lot of different departments. You can find a job that truly interests you in multiple departments. From coding, legal, HR, and funding, to jobs like keeping museums open, arranging national sporting tournaments, regenerating towns and adjusting the curriculum in schools. Be open and be passionate.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
To aim high, even further than you think might be possible.
