Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
After leaving school, I completed a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Triple Distinction), developing a strong foundation in safeguarding, communication, and understanding complex needs. I began my career as a Mental Health Support Worker, gaining frontline experience in regulated care settings. I then moved into people- and systems-focused roles in HR within hospitality and administration within the NHS, building skills in governance, compliance, and organisational processes. Since 2022, I have specialised in data, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting at Cumbria Youth Alliance, progressing into a senior role leading organisation-wide data systems, impact reporting, and stakeholder support.
— What do you love about your job?
I love supporting young people by helping organisations deliver better services. Improving data, systems, and evidence means decisions are based on real needs, leading to better outcomes. I enjoy working with others, solving problems together, and knowing my work helps create positive, lasting change for young people.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
Focus on learning and building confidence rather than finding the perfect role straight away. Choose opportunities that help you develop skills, meet new people, and understand what you enjoy. Be open to change, ask for support, and remember that every step—even unexpected ones—can help shape your next move.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Listening, Problem Solving, Leadership.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
Be curious, people-focused, and open to learning. Take time to understand the needs of those you support and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Building strong relationships and using evidence to guide decisions will help you create meaningful, lasting impact, especially when working with young people and communities.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Focus on building skills and experience rather than chasing job titles. Stay open to learning, seek feedback, and trust that steady progress and curiosity will guide you to the right opportunities.
