Q&A
— Give a short overview of your career journey after school
I studied Music at Kendal College for three years before moving to Manchester to study Electronic Music Production at BIMM University.
During this time, I developed strong technical and creative skills, particularly in working with computers and digital systems. After graduating, I took on a local role to help pay off my student loans, originally intending it to be a temporary step. However, the combination of problem solving, communication, and my passion for travel quickly made me realise I had found a career I genuinely enjoyed. Within three months, I had fully committed, progressing within the industry and landed my current position of assistant manager.
— What do you love about your job?
I enjoy the detailed problem solving involved in planning and organising holidays, and the satisfaction that comes from bringing every element together successfully. No two days in the office are ever the same, which keeps the role engaging. My position allows me to remain creative when designing personalised itineraries for clients, while also requiring strong attention to detail when calculating costs and securing the best possible value for customers.
I am fortunate to work with a supportive and friendly team, alongside customers who are always a pleasure to help. The most rewarding part of the role is knowing that the work we do can genuinely make someone’s day (or year!) by creating their perfect holiday experience.
— What piece of advice would you give to young people about finding their best next step?
My advice to young people would be to focus on developing transferable skills and avoid putting too much pressure on themselves to have their entire future mapped out straight away. The role or course you choose now does not have to define the rest of your life. Most successful careers are not built through one perfectly straight path, but through continuous learning, adaptability, and personal growth.
— What three essential skills do you think have helped you to be successful in your job?
Speaking, Problem Solving, Teamwork.
— What advice would you give to someone considering working in your industry?
Being friendly, approachable, and polite is essential, as first impressions can make or break you in the travel industry. At its core, the job is centred around creating positive experiences and making people happy, so presenting yourself and setting the right example from the very first interaction is super important. Strong communication, patience, and a positive attitude all play a huge part in building trust and delivering excellent customer service.
— What is the best piece of advice you have been given that has helped you on your career journey?
Mistakes happen, as we are all human, but the way you communicate and handle a situation is what shapes the experience and leaves a lasting impression.
